In March, Kaylee Henderson was recognized as part of Kyrene's Courage Awards for being an inspiring leader and positive role model in the face of adversity. We are proud to share that Kaylee was also recognized by the City of Tempe for the 2020 Tempe Youthfest and Courage Awards. Although the awards ceremony is canceled, we still want to share her story and impact with our community.
Kaylee is of the Salt Clan and born of the Deer Water People, and is a 7th grade student at Kyrene Middle School. Kaylee is very proud of her Navajo culture and traditions and she believes that her great-grandmother's teachings have helped her with the challenging transition from living on the Navajo reservations to starting middle school in Tempe.
Kaylee has overcome many hardships in her life due to the loss of close, loving family members. She is being raised by her aunt, uncle and grandmother, and spends as much time as possible in Navajo Mountain where she takes part in traditional ceremonies and continues learning her native language and songs.
An active leader at school and in her community, Kaylee is always striving to help others whenever and however she can. She has her eyes set on studying environmental engineering and hopes to use skills gained through her education to help her community and reservation. Congratulations, Kaylee!
