Two Kyrene educators were recognized in December, 2019 by Kyrene School District and Arizona K12 Center for earning National Board Certification (NBC). Alichia Russ of Kyrene de los Niños earned her certification, and Julie Cleveland of Kyrene de la Estrella earned her renewal.
National Board Certification is the highest certificate an educator can achieve in the United States. The certificate, awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), goes beyond state licensure. It is achieved by successfully completing a rigorous process of performance-based analysis and peer review that can take up to three years.
According to the NBPTS website, National Board Certification was “designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Research shows performance growth among students of Board-certified teachers, with an even greater impact among minority and low-income students. NBC teachers often advance to leadership positions, where they can have an even broader impact on students and learning.
Only two percent of K-12 educators in the U.S. are Nationally Board Certified. Russ joins 22 fellow Kyrene educators with the prestigious NBC recognition.
