Kyrene Recognized for Financial Excellence with National Award

Posted January 2024

Kyrene Elementary School District is once again the recipient of the prestigious Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for fiscal year 2023-24. Kyrene remains the only district in Arizona to receive the award for the second year in a row. Nationally, fewer than 150 districts earn the award each year. Kyrene is the first Arizona district to earn the award in more than a decade.

ASBO International’s MBA recognizes excellence in school budget policies, practices, and presentation. To qualify for the award, districts must develop a budget report that is comprehensive, analytical and demonstrates sound fiscal management. Kyrene has produced a comprehensive budget report for the last four years, and this is the second year the district submitted the report for an award.

“To be recognized with this award once again demonstrates that Kyrene’s budgeting practices are exemplary on a national scale,” said Kyrene Chief Financial Officer and Associate Superintendent Chris Herrmann. “Kyrene takes our responsibility to taxpayers very seriously, and this report is evidence of that commitment.”

Kyrene’s Annual Budget Report has become a critical communications tool for the district, providing stakeholders a detailed accounting of Kyrene finances. That transparency helped the district secure voter approval in November for its bond and capital overrides.

“This report is more than numbers. It really tells the story of how Kyrene’s resources are aligned with educational outcomes, Kyrene Superintendent Laura Toenjes said. “We are educating future leaders, creators and community contributors. The stakes are high, and accountability and transparency are critical. I am tremendously proud of Kyrene’s Finance team for the integrity that they bring daily to their work.”
