City of Tempe awards arts grant to Kyrene Middle School and C.I. Waggoner
October 10, 2018
Congratulations to Ellen Pope, Visual Arts Teacher at Waggoner Elementary, and Julio Contreras, Mariachi and Orchestra Teacher at Kyrene Middle School for receiving Arts grants from the City of Tempe. School Arts Grants of up to $750 are awarded to expand and enhance the services already provided by arts curriculum, programs and clubs.
Pope’s proposed project titled “A Character Counts Mosaic” will be an art project that impacts all 562 students plus the staff and community of Waggoner. The 48’x 3’ mosaic will illustrate the ongoing school-wide “no place for hate” project.
The KMS grant will fund Mariachi uniform pieces (sashes, ties, hair bows and sombreros) for about 30 of the ninety-plus students enrolled in 6th, 7th and 8th grade Mariachi classes this year. The Mariachi program at KMS continues to flourish and has truly become a positive source of pride for the KMS community.
Kyrene Arts teachers, like Pope and Contreras, are innovative and creative. “Thank you” to the City of Tempe for supporting the Arts in Tempe schools!
