The Colina STEM Teacher Team, in conjunction with input from the staff, developed a three year plan as a guide to increase inquiry based STEM instruction in the classroom. The goal of the plan is to provide teachers the time and opportunities for planning and implementing STEM learning successfully across the school. The initial planning began in the 2016 - 2017 school year. During the 2017 - 2018 school year, staff received professional development focused on inquiry based instruction. The Thinking Lab transitioned into a STEM Lab and provided additional opportunities for science instruction. During the 2018-2019 school year, teachers integrated additional STEM activities into other content areas. The 2019-2020 school year begins the final year of our roll-out. Colina is participating in a STEM coaching model as we partner with the Arizona Science Center. In addition, teacher teams are creating grade level quarterly instructional guides. The goal of this three year rollout is to transition Colina into a STEM Academy.
Our STEM Lab provides opportunities for students to explore and engage in research, planning and problem solving through the Engineering Design Model and the Scientific Method.
