• Governing Board Meetings

    Regular meetings of the Governing Board are held at 7 p.m. in the Governing Board Room at the Ben Furlong Education Center, 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe, usually on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. View Schedule.

    At least 24 hours before a Board meeting, a public notice and agenda are physically posted at the Ben Furlong Education Center. The agenda can be viewed in the Board Docs system.

    All Board meetings, except executive sessions, are open to the public. Under Arizona law, the Board may call an executive session to discuss personnel matters, the purchase or lease of real property, meet-and-confer discussions, and legal matters with attorneys, among other things. 

  • Meeting Information

    The first board meeting of each month has been designated to focus on presentations, recognitions, a consent agenda, and a call to the audience.  Generally, no board action will be taken on presentation items at these meetings, but there may be exceptions.  This meeting is intended to be informative in nature, providing background to the board prior to taking action. 

    The second meeting of each month has been designated to focus on the business of the district, to include action items related to information previously presented, a consent agenda and a call to the audience.

     

    Public Comment

    Kyrene School District values transparency and public input. The Governing Board invites public comment at regularly scheduled Board meetings. In order to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to address the Board, the President may set a time limit for individual comments, based on the number of comments submitted, as follows:

    • 1–15 speakers:  3 minutes
    • 16–30 speakers:  2 minutes
    • 31+ speakers: 1 minute

  • Types of Board Meetings

    Regular Meeting (2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month)

    Regular meetings are held in public to conduct the business of District. Agenda items include action items such as personnel matters, consent agenda, and policy adoptions; presentations about agenda items or future agenda items; recognition of students, staff and volunteers; items for future consideration and public comment.

    Study Session Meeting (As Needed)

    Study session meetings are held in public, usually before a regular meeting, for District staff to present information about a program, issue or upcoming regular meeting agenda item. During a study session, the board may have a discussion, but no vote or official action is taken and there is no public comment during the study session.

    Executive Session Meeting (As Needed)

    Executive session meetings are held in a closed session without public attendance. Agenda items are limited to those outlined in A.R.S. § 38-431.03 (personnel matters; confidential records; legal advice; contract negotiations; salary negotiations; intergovernmental negotiations; purchase, sale or lease of property; school safety operations, plans or programs; and security and safety of facilities, operations and critical infrastructure). During an executive session, the board may have discussion and instruct legal counsel, but no vote is taken.

    Board Retreat (As Needed)

    Board retreats are held in public and are usually for the purpose of the Board to engage in trainings. During a board retreat, the board may have a discussion, but no vote or official action is taken and there is no public comment during the study session.

    Special Meeting (As Needed)

    Special board meetings may be called if approval is needed on an item before the next regularly scheduled board meeting.
