Make Word Documents Accessible

  • The primary purpose of the Kyrene School District website is to communicate with parents, students, staff, and community members about our classrooms, schools, and district. Kyrene School District is committed to making www.kyrene.org compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. The following are recommendations to be used when linking Word and PDF documents to district web pages.

Word has an Accessibility Checker that locates elements that might cause problems for people with disabilities, and provides an easy way to resolve those issue. This Accessibility Checker will help with the following.

    • Add Alt Text to images and graphics:
Alt text helps people who can’t see the screen to understand what’s important in images and other visuals.
In alt text, briefly describe the image.

    • Add Meaningful Hyperlink Text and Screen Tips:
People who use screen readers sometimes scan a list of links. Links should convey clear and accurate information about the destination. For example, instead of linking to the text Click here, include the full title of the destination page.

    • Use Table Headers:
Screen readers keep track of their location in a table by counting table cells. The Accessibility Checker will report issues with tables and table headers.

When finalizing a Word document, use the Accessibility Checker to help with issues.
