I am so excited to be starting my 6th year at Centennial Middle School and my 20th year of teaching. I have spent the majority of my teaching career in Middle School teaching everything from Language Arts, Social Studies, and Journalism (Yearbook and Newspaper). I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education both from Northern Arizona University and will be finishing up a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University this October.I am a homegrown Arizona girl, I was born in Idaho but was raised in Prescott and lived there until we moved to Phoenix 5 years ago. My oldest son, Christopher, is a senior in High School and my youngest son, Camden, is in Elementary School. When I am not at school I can be found reading, writing, watching tv and movies, playing soccer or volleyball with my kids or traveling and camping.I am looking forward to getting to know all my students and parents this year!TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
In order to be successful in this course, students are expected to be active participants. It is my goal to provide a positive and engaging classroom where all students have the opportunity to learn, succeed, and share their thoughts and opinions verbally without fear of failure, embarrassment or ridicule.
AVID
AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. AVID's WICOR strategies are used in class to in order to:
*Teach skills and behaviors for academic success
*Provide support with a strong student/teacher relationship
*Create a positive peer group for students
*Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
*Prepared - Be on time. Have materials ready (Spiral Notebook, Agenda, Book, Pencil). Be ready to learn.
*Polite - Treat each other with respect, Use your manners. Follow the classroom rules. Keep room neat.
*Performing - Follow directions. Stay involved and engaged. Be on task
In order for each student to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom, a positive and respectful attitude is expected of all students, this includes respecting others’ thoughts, work, feelings, and individuality. If a student does not demonstrate positive behavior, I will visit with him/her and we will try to resolve the issue together. If this proves unsuccessful, the student will be asked to take time to refocus and can return when they are ready to demonstrate positive behaviors. If the negative behaviors continue students will be sent to the Focus Room and a phone call home will be made. Chronic negative behaviors will result in a conference with the student, parents, the student’s team of teachers, and a principal to establish a behavior plan.
