Kyrene Speller Headed to 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee

For the first time in Kyrene School District’s 135-year history, a Kyrene speller is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Top spellers from across Arizona competed in the Arizona State Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 16. Congratulations to Isabelle Garcia, a 7th grade student at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School for finishing 2nd and qualifying to compete in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

During the state bee, which lasted four hours, Isabelle competed in 35 rounds against 27 other talented spellers and masterfully spelled words like longitude, rotary, albinism and mawkish. As a state finalist, Isabelle received a trophy and a trip for two including airfare and lodging to the national bee as well as $800 in travel money with support from the Arizona Educational Foundation, the hosts of the Arizona State Spelling Bee.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee Week is May 26–31 in National Harbor, Maryland. The National Competition will begin with preliminary rounds on Tuesday, May 28 and conclude with the final rounds on Thursday, May 30.

Kyrene congratulates all spellers and wishes Isabelle G-O-O-D L-U-C-K on the national stage!
