Kyrene Traditional Academy Principal Dr. Marianne Lescher has been named Arizona’s 2025 National Distinguished Principal® (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and is being recognized this week in Washington, D.C.

Every chapter of my career has reinforced my passion for creating schools where students love to learn and teachers love to teach,” said Dr. Lescher. “This honor represents not just my work, but the extraordinary educators and families who have walked alongside me in building communities where excellence is the expectation and every child feels known, respected and valued.”

Established in 1984, the NDP program recognizes pre-K through 8th grade public school leaders from across the country. Public school elementary and middle-level principals are nominated by peers in their state, and final selections are made by committees appointed by each of NAESP’s state affiliate offices. Leaders are selected for their track record of setting high standards for instruction, student achievement, character and climate for the students’ families and staff in their learning communities.

In her 25 years serving as a principal, Dr. Lescher has earned numerous awards. Two schools she has led have been named Arizona A+ School of Excellence on six occasions. For the last 13 years, she has served as principal of Kyrene Traditional Academy. In 2011, she led the school’s transition from an elementary school into a traditional model kindergarten through 8th grade school. Also under her leadership, Kyrene Traditional Academy was the first in the district to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2015.

“Dr. Lescher’s leadership has made a lasting impact on Kyrene Traditional Academy and Kyrene School District,” said Kyrene Superintendent Laura Toenjes. “Her commitment to high standards and continuous improvement exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and care.”

This year’s 43 NDP honorees will attend a two-day event in Washington, D.C. from October 23-24. Attendees will have the opportunity to network, share best practices, and learn from their peers.
