Kyrene Earns Fourth Consecutive National Meritorious Budget Award

Kyrene Elementary School District has once again received national recognition for exemplary financial stewardship, earning the prestigious Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for the fourth straight year. Nationwide, fewer than 150 districts earn this award each year. Kyrene was the first Arizona district to earn the award in more than a decade and is the only district to achieve the recognition four years in a row.

The MBA program recognizes school districts that meet the highest standards in budget development and presentation. To earn the award, districts must submit a comprehensive, transparent and analytically rigorous budget that reflects responsible planning and community accountability.

“Receiving this award for the fourth year in a row reflects the precision, care, and integrity with which our Finance team approaches its work,” said Chris Herrmann, Kyrene Chief Financial Officer and Associate Superintendent. “Our budget report demonstrates how every financial decision supports Kyrene’s commitment to responsible stewardship and strong educational outcomes for students.”

Kyrene’s Annual Budget Report is a critical communications tool for the district, providing families, staff and community members a clear and detailed accounting of Kyrene financial practices. This transparency has played a pivotal role in building public trust, helping the district secure voter approval for bond initiatives and budget overrides in recent years.

“I commend our Finance team for their dedication and the thoughtful planning reflected throughout this report,” said Kyrene Superintendent Laura Toenjes. “It clearly shows how Kyrene aligns resources with the Kyrene Promise, ensuring our students are ready to thrive in high school, college, career and beyond.”
