Starting kindergarten is one of the most exciting milestones in a child’s life, and a big moment for families, too! Kyrene School District believes that school readiness goes beyond knowing the ABCs. It’s about helping your child feel confident, curious, and comfortable as they step into their first classroom experience.
“One of the best things you can do to help your kindergartener prepare for the first day of school is to start talking about it early,” Sarah Collins, Director of P-3 Academic Equity and Excellence, said.
Whether you’re a first-time kindergarten parent or you’ve done this before, here are five helpful tips to make sure your child is ready to thrive on day one.
1. Build Routines Early
Children thrive on structure. Establish a consistent daily routine that includes regular wake-up, meal, and bedtimes. Practice a “school morning” schedule before the first day, getting dressed, packing a backpack, and heading out the door, to make the real transition smoother. Collins recommends starting now getting into bedtime and morning routines, including reading their favorite stories each night.
Kyrene Tip: Meet the Teacher Night on Monday, July 21 is a wonderful opportunity for families and students to meet others who are starting the same journey and can help build a sense of community before school begins.
2. Encourage Independence
Kindergarteners benefit from being able to do basic tasks on their own, such as:
- Putting on their shoes and jacket
- Washing hands
- Using the bathroom independently
- Opening lunch containers or snack bags
Practicing these tasks at home builds confidence and helps them feel ready to tackle the day on their own.
3. Read Together Every Day
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to prepare your child for school success. Storytime builds vocabulary, strengthens listening skills, and sparks imagination. Ask questions about the story and pictures to improve comprehension.
Kyrene Tip: As part of the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, Kyrene is prioritizing early literacy in kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms. The best foundation, however, starts at home. Just 15 minutes a day makes a big difference!
4. Practice Social Skills
Kindergarten is a big step socially. Help your child prepare by teaching them how to:
- Share and take turns
- Follow directions
- Use kind words
- Ask for help when needed
Set up playdates or attend library story times to give your child a chance to interact with peers in group settings.
5. Talk About Kindergarten Positively
Your attitude toward school sets the tone. Talk about kindergarten as an exciting adventure full of learning and new friends. Walk them through what to expect, from lining up in the morning to meeting their teacher.
“This is a big moment for the kids and the parents so remember to share feelings, even the ones that are a little scary,” Collins said. “Talk about how much fun they will have meeting new friends and learning new things at school. Most of all, remember that this is a big moment that will come with big feelings, so allow yourself and your little one to feel them and enjoy the experience.”
Kyrene Tip: Ask your child what they’re excited or nervous about. Acknowledge their feelings and offer reassurance.
