School Resource Officers in Kyrene

On campus to keep Kyrene kids safe and on the path to success.School Resource Officers (SROs) are police officers assigned to schools by their local police department. They are positive role models who work hard to build relationships with students so that everyone feels safe, comfortable, and ready to learn. SROs are trained to help prevent problems on campus and to respond to emergencies, if necessary. Their main job, however; is to work with students, staff and teachers to build a positive school community.

Law Related Education (LRE) Curriculum

School Resource Officers do:

  • Build healthy relationships with students, preventing bullying, drugs and alcohol use
  • Provide up to 180 hours of Law Related Education (LRE) each year

  • Spend most of their time on campus doing duty - before and after school, during passing periods and at lunch

  • Engage in evidence-based practices when working with students

School Resource Officers don't:

  • Initially respond to student discipline incidents on campus

  • Assist teachers with classroom management

  • Investigate low level discipline referrals, disciplinary actions or assign consequences

  • Criminalize juvenile behavior

  • Substitute for classroom teachers
