Behavior Intervention Teacher Specialists

Behavior Intervention Teacher Specialists (BITS) provide leadership and direction to school teams.  They help design, coordinate, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school-wide, small group, and individualized behavior supports.  BITS provide on-going consultation with administrators, teachers, and parents in the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavioral inclusive strategies and interventions.

The BITS support administration and school teams at each tier in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process as it relates to social/emotional/behavioral needs:

●        Tier 1 - The BITS are available to consult on the implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS). They serve as the District PBIS Coach at the site level.

●        Tier 2 - The BITS are available to consult on Check in/Check out (CICO) intervention.

●        Tier 3 - The BITS support with developing Tier 3 interventions (individualized Behavior Support Plans (BSPs)) for students not responding to Tier 2 interventions.

The BITS support administration and school teams with students already identified with a disability and:

●        Require Tier 3 behavioral supports.

●        May need a more restrictive setting to meet his/her behavioral needs (Cross-Categorical Behavior (CCB) or Cross-Categorical Behavior Sensory (CCBS) or Alternative School Setting).

●        Move into the District and are coming from self-contained behavior programs.

The BITS support the success of the District’s CCB and CCBS programs by providing mentoring and coaching to teachers and Instructional Assistants (IAs) within the programs.

The BITS support and monitor the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) process at the site level.

The BITS provide training for district staff. These trainings include but are not limited to:

●        Behavior Support Plans (BSP)

●        Behavior Intervention Strategies

●        Data Collection

●        PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)

●        NCI (Non-violent crisis intervention)

The BITS serve as team members for students with significant mental health and behavioral challenges in outside special day school and Residential Treatment Center (RTC) placements.
