    Tiger Kyrene Traditional Academy Athletics

Update as of November 18, 2020

Dear KTA Families of Student Athletes,

We want to provide you with a quick correction to today’s message from the Kyrene School District, announcing contingency online learning for all students. In the “Athletics” section, it states that there will be sports practices during the Online Contingency Period. There will not be practices. Kyrene Athletics programs are aligned with the District Mitigation Plan. While schools are in an online learning contingency model, there will be no sports practices, games, or meets. For more information, view Kyrene’s Safe Return to Athletics plan.

For the Week of Nov. 23:

    • The KTA Cross Country team will practice on Monday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 1:45-3:30 pm. There is no practice on Wednesday, Nov. 25 (typically a morning practice). The Cross country meet scheduled for Tuesday, November 24 has been cancelled.
    • The KTA Boys Basketball team will practice on Monday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 1:45-3:30 pm. There is no practice on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

***The Mandatory Boys Basketball Meeting for Parents, currently on hold, will be scheduled once the Kyrene School District is no longer in the Online Contingency Period.

After Thanksgiving Break starting on Nov. 30 (During the Online Contingency Period):

    • There will be no sports practices, games, or meets during the online continency period.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Patty Hineman

    KTA Athletic Director/Assistant Principal

Dear Parents of Athletes Trying Out for KTA Boys Basketball:

Due to a number of factors, including the Kyrene School District closely watching the Maricopa County dashboard (https://www.maricopa.gov/5594/School-Metrics) for schools to track COVID-19 public health benchmarks for Kyrene School District, Mr. Shepherd will be extending try outs for MS Boys Basketball from 3 days to 4 days (Monday, November 16-Thursday, November 19) . Please plan to have your child attend Boys Basketball tryouts on Thursday, November 19 from 1:45-3:30 pm. There will be no tryouts on Friday, November 20.

Coach Shepherd will post the names of the student athletes who made the Boys Basketball Team by Thursday evening, November 19. Athletes who are selected for the KTA Boys Basketball Team will practice with Coach Shepherd on Monday, Nov. 23 and Tues., Nov. 24 in the KTA gym from 1:45-4:00 pm. There will be no practice on Wed., Nov. 25.

Finally, the Mandatory Boys Basketball Parent Meeting that was originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19 at 5 pm via Zoom has been cancelled until further notice.

    Sincerely,

Coach Shepherd & Dr. Patty Hineman, KTA Athletic Director

Athletics: Important Update as of November 12

    November 12, 2020

    Dear KTA Families,

We have been monitoring our daily total number of registrations for Girls Soccer, Softball, Cheer, and Boys Basketball. Online registrations have closed. Based on our numbers of registrations, we are ready to offer ONE boys basketball team and ONE softball team (grades 6th-8th) at each site. Tryouts will begin on Mon., Nov 16.

Our Cross-Country team will resume on Thurs., Nov. 12. The KTA Cross Country team has a Cross Country meet on Thurs., Nov. 12, and athletes should arrive at the front of the school by 3 pm to board the school bus for Pueblo Middle School. The meet begins at 4 pm.

The Kyrene School District will not be able to offer Girls Soccer this year due to the lack of interest across the district.

On Monday, November 16, KTA athletes, who have registered for Softball at Aprende, will begin tryouts on Monday, Nov. 16.

Cheer teams will be offered at three of our middle schools (Aprende, Kyrene Middle School, and Pueblo). This decision was based on the number of students who expressed interest in Cheer, as there are a minimum number of students required to offer a particular athletic program.

The Kyrene School District will continue to monitor the metrics each week and offer our Kyrene Athletics Program in accordance with our Safe Return to Athletics Plan. Thank you for your patience while we review the data, as the safety of staff and student athletes is our highest priority.

Should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Stacy Millyard, KTA Athletic Secretary at 480-541-5404. We appreciate your patience and support of our Kyrene Athletic Program!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Patty Hineman

    KTA Athletic Director/Assistant Principal

For the 2020-2021 school year, KTA will continue to offer a number of athletic teams on campus: Boys Basketball, Cheer, Cross Country, and Girls Basketball. Because of limitations on equipment, the size of our KTA field areas, etc., KTA students will continue to have the opportunity to register for Aprende’s Track & Field team (non-cut sport-spring).  In addition, KTA students are encouraged to try-out for the following cut sports: Girls Soccer (winter), Softball (winter), and Boys Baseball (spring). The Kyrene School District will provide transportation from KTA to Aprende for afternoon practices. All transportation to away games will be provided by the Kyrene School District. Parents must provide on-time transportation home from all home and away games.

Students interested in the Kyrene Athletic Program will need to adhere to the same expectations for sports physicals, fees, and try-outs as the other middle schools.

KTA will hold its own sports for the following sports:

    Fall:  Cancelled

Winter: Cheer (cut sport) and Boys Basketball (cut sport) Cross Country (non-cut sport)

    Spring: Girls Basketball (cut sport)

KTA Students may participate with Aprende for the 2020/2021 school year and transportation will be provided for the following sports:

    Fall:  Cancelled

Winter: Wrestling (non cut) Postponed due to this being a high-risk sport, Girls Soccer (cut sport) and Girls Softball (cut sport)

Spring: Track and Field (non-cut sport) and Boys Baseball (cut sport)
