2017-18 Instructional Calendar Update
Thank you for staying connected throughout school closure days. The information that families and staff shared throughout our school closure days reinforced a message of support for our learning community. With the announcement of the return to school, we were able to convene the Governing Board to take action on the instructional calendar.
Governing Board Special Session - Thursday, May 3, 2018
The Governing Board held a special session to vote on a motion to suspend Governing Board Policy IC and modify Kyrene’s instructional calendar.
As previously shared, Kyrene Board Policy IC calls for meeting both the state statute, A.R.S. §15-861, for instructional minutes as well as requiring 180 days of attendance. The Board approved the recommendation to modify the instructional calendar from 180 days to 174 days. While this action reduces the number of instructional days, the modification still meets the required instructional minutes for grades K-8.
Questions & Answers
The school year will end with a full day of school on May 24. This was previously a half day. Wednesday, May 23, will remain a full day of school for students. Grade 8 promotion at each of our middle schools will continue as planned.
The changes to the instructional calendar do not affect our preschool calendars. The last day for Integrated and Tempe PRE preschool students remains the same, May 22. The last day for Community and Signature preschool students alsoremains unchanged, May 24.
Families are encouraged to review current school newsletters for updates about school activities. School leaders and staff are working to reschedule events and report information as soon as it is available. Thank you for everyone's patience as information is modified on school calendars.
Now that schools have reopened, Community Education will begin issuing refunds for days that the schools were closed. Refunds for Kids Club, After Hours, and Preschool will be issued for all impacted students. We ask for your continued patience as the refund process could take up to two weeks to complete. If your child was also enrolled in a Youth Enrichment class that was impacted by the walkout, make-up classes are being scheduled and further communication will be sent to you with those dates. We understand that the past six days may have been difficult for many of you. Again, on behalf of the entire Community Education Services team, we thank you for your continued patience as we work diligently to resolve this matter. If you have any questions, please contact us at 480-541-1500.
The Kyrene School District will have food service programs available regionally at four school sites: Ninos, Lomas, Kyrene Traditional Academy, and Milenio. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students from any Kyrene school are able to come to the open school sites for food service programs. Students will be able to use their school lunch account. Students may purchase breakfast for $1.65 or lunch for $2.90. Adults may purchase breakfast for $2.00 or lunch for $3.50. Siblings who do not attend a Kyrene school may purchase breakfast for $2.00 or lunch for $3.00. No student supervision will be available - a parent or adult must be present.
Yes, facilities and fields are closed until further notice during the school week. Reservations affected by the school closures will be removed from permits so that fees are not incurred. Weekend reservations are not affected by the school closures and will remain as scheduled.
Our highest priority is the safety and security of our children. In the event of a teacher walk-out, we will not be able to guarantee adequate supervision of our students and will need to close schools district-wide. This decision will impact all schools, preschool through eighth grade.
Families should rely only on official district communication for information about school closings. This includes the Kyrene School District’s emergency notification system, school websites, auto-dialer, and verified district and school social media accounts. Families are encouraged to make sure that phone numbers and email addresses are current in our student information system, and to subscribe to the District e-News.
Families do not need to call the school to report an absence during a school closure.
Information will be updated daily on the school websites, and family notifications will be sent through Kyrene communication channels. Families are encouraged to make sure that phone numbers and email addresses are current in our student information system, and to subscribe to the District e-News.
Most testing dates for Kyrene School District were scheduled to be completed before April 26. AIMS Science tests and AzMERIT writing tests are already complete. The end of the state assessment window is April 27. Site leaders are working with individual school schedules to make any needed adjustment to maximize student opportunities to test. Later this spring and after it is determined if school closures affect individual student participation, school leaders will contact families of impacted students.
Neither grades nor 8th grade promotion ceremonies will be affected by school closure.
School events and field trips on days of school closure will be cancelled.
At this time, extended field trips will continue as planned as long as we are able to ensure the safety of students through adequate supervision. As information becomes available, teachers and sponsors will provide updated information to families.
No, a 25% credit will be emailed to families in the form of a promotion coupon. The credit may be used for any school year enrichment program (not Kids Club, After Hours or Preschool) and must be redeemed by December 31, 2018.
Community Education Services is trying to reschedule all classes but it is dependent upon teacher/vendor availability. In the event that a class cannot be rescheduled, a prorated refund will be issued.
