About Mr. James
Dear Lagos Community,
It is a tremendous honor to serve as the Assistant Principal at Kyrene de los Lagos Dual Language Academy, an excelling A+ school. Prior to graduating from Arizona State University with a Master in Educational Leadership and Principalship, I taught middle school reading and writing in the Kyrene School District at Kyrene del Pueblo and Kyrene Middle School, served for several years as the English Language Arts Department Chair, and participated in a wide range of school-wide leadership initiatives. At the start of my career in education, I also tutored students in an AVID program in the Tempe Elementary School District, and I also mentored high school students in the Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates Program in the Tempe Union High School District.
As a school leader at a Dual Language Academy, I also speak Spanish. My journey into bilingualism began with four consecutive years of formal Spanish instruction in high school in Akron, Ohio – my home town. I also joined a volunteer program during high school called Amigos de las Americas, which I jokingly refer to as “Peace Corps Lite.” After a year of intensive training, I volunteered in a rural community in the Dominican Republic for 8 weeks teaching community hygiene, dental hygiene, and community organization. In subsequent summers, I traveled throughout Central and South America sight-seeing and learning as much as possible about the Spanish language and Latin American history and cultures.
My wife also shares the same passion for traveling and learning. We are excited to enroll our son in the Dual Language program as soon as he is old enough so that he too can become bilingual, biliterate, and have a deeply-rooted multicultural awareness. When I am not pursuing my professional passions in education, I love spending time with my family and friends, reading non-fiction and science fiction, cooking delicious meals, and spending time outdoors. I also love photography, hiking, camping, birdwatching, and rock climbing, which is my greatest passion outside of education.
I look forward to meeting all of the supportive parents and motivated students in the Kyrene de los Lagos community.
