• This would be the 26th year of our Friends Across Borders Exchange!

    UPCOMING EVENTS:

OUR FIRST STUDENT MEETING DATE HAS BEEN CANCELLED!   IT IS WITH EXTREME REGRET AND SORROW THAT WE HAVE LEARNED THAT WE WILL NOT BE RECEIVING THE STUDENTS FROM MEXICO THIS YEAR!  With the current political climate our sister school in Mexico has decided they cannot participate in the exchange this year.

    Some history...

For many years, our club was called Hands Across the Border (HATB).  Our students voted four years ago to change the name of our club to FAB - Friends Across Borders.  So, you will see HATB (Hands Across the Border) and FAB used interchangeably. Sponsors are Sra. Mindy Rohman at mrohman@kyrene.org and Sra. Lori Vanover (retired Akimel A-al Spanish teacher) at lvanover@kyrene.org.

The FAB Club Officers for 2017-2018 were:
    Jocelyn Peña - President
    Carson White - Vice President
    Ailani López - Treasurer
    Victoria Rascón - Secretary

Do you want to get a student ambassador perspective on our club and our student exchange?
In 2015-16, our FAB members created a Akimel A-al Friends Across Borders PowerPoint document.  If you'd like to know more about our exchange, please look at it, as it was created by the students in the club, and will give you a very good idea of what we do in our club.

Please click on the FAB Brochure to read about the details of how our club is set up and run.  The brochure will answer many of the most common questions students and parents have about our club and activities!

Some students choose to host a student from Mexico and some do not.  Hosting a student is NOT required.  All students in our club are referred to as "student ambassadors". FAB is the perfect opportunity for AMS students to make new friends, both at school and with student visitors from our sister school in Esperanza, Mexico.  It is also an opportunity to learn about Mexico's language and culture, and to put that knowledge into practice, in a real world setting! We do several community projects and fundraisers.  When the Mexican students are here visiting, we go on fieldtrips (planned by the FAB members) and many other activities.  FAB is fabulous FUN!  To get an idea of the types of activities we do, keep reading (below)...

Those wishing to host a Mexican student this school year must complete a FAB student letter to your prospective partner, in ENGLISH. Please use this Letter Writing Guide  to help you.  Those wishing to be part of our club, but not host a Mexican student do not need to complete the letter.

What did we do last year,2017-18?

The students from Mexico visited us from Wedneday evening, May 2 to Sunday morning, May 6.  Please click on the Itinerary 2018 for the details.  Clicking on last year's itinerary will give you a snapshot of what our exchange involves.

The FAB CAR WASH was Saturday, April 7 from 10am until 1pm at the Yoasis yogurt shop in the Safeway shopping center on Chandler Blvd. and Desert Foothills Parkway.  We raised $226.

Immediately after the car wash we met inside the Yoasis shop in their meeting room for our Cultural Workshop, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The Cultural Workshop is a short but IMPORTANT MANDATORY meeting for all FAB students and one/parent guardian to attend together.  Both parents/guardians and other family members are welcome to attend.  It is designed for students and their parents, to learn more about Mexico's language and culture. At this meeting, we discussed and finalized the many details of the upcoming student exchange. Information and ideas for how to make the exchange a success for all students and family members is provided.  Topics were such things as: useful vocabulary in Spanish, itinerary details, suggestions for hosting, cultural information about Mexico, and specifically about the area of our sister school in Esperanza, Sonora, Mexico.  Please look at the Cultural Workshop handouts located at the bottom of this web page for more important information not covered in the workshop!

FAB Club members sold Gold Canyon Candles through April 23.  We raised $64.

FAB Club members sponsored a clothing and small home goods drive to benefit the Sunshine Acres Children's Group Home March 27 through 31st.  Sunshine Acres is a group home for homeless children.  They have a small thrift shop where they sell donated items.  The money is used to operate the group home. We collected 650 pounds!  A big THANK YOU to our biggest contributor, Sra. Kianpour!

Our Pulsera Sale (during lunch times at school) was the week of February 6-10.  We sent a check to the Pulsera Project for $1,175.00 and earned $195 for our club. Thanks to all of the FAB Club members who helped with the sale!
