About the Principal—Kelley Brunner
I have been very blessed to be a part of the Kyrene District since 1986. I was a classroom teacher for 23 years and have taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade and 1/2 multi-age. I was the student advisor/assistant principal at Kyrene de los Cerritos for two years before being named the principal of Colina in 2011. My passion for working with children, teaching, and learning are among the strengths that I bring to our school. All children who enter our doors are destined for greatness.
As the very proud principal of Kyrene de la Colina, I am honored to welcome you to our amazing school. It has always been my desire to be a part of a school that truly believes that all children deserve to be in a place that makes them feel safe, happy, and loved - a place where dynamic learning opportunities are at the forefront for all children and children's efforts are recognized and celebrated. It is also important to me that all children and adults feel welcome as soon as they walk through the doors of our school. This is what we have at Kyrene de la Colina. Our rich diversity warms my heart and contributes to our greatness.
Colina is currently working towards becoming a STEM Academy. Grade level teams work together to plan meaningful STEM opportunities each quarter. In addition, we are so pleased to have an Instructional Technology teacher at Colina this year. Every child in grades K-5, attends technology class each week. To be 21st Century Learners, children need to be technology literate. We are also happy to announce that we are now a one-to-one school, which means every child has a Chrome Book and access to technology throughout the learning day.
I believe it is important for all children to know me and trust me. That is why I am very visible on campus—out front for parent drop-off and pick-up, on the playground, in the halls, and in classrooms. I’m very easy to spot as I usually am wearing my bright orange vest!
I was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa and received my undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa. I am a very loyal panther fan and you will see me sporting my purple and gold during football and basketball season. After graduating from UNI, I moved to Arizona to be close to my sister and my nieces. I received my master’s in education Degree from Arizona State University in 1992 and became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2005.
My husband and I have four children between us. I am the very proud mother of two adult sons, Brice and Sean, and two adult stepchildren, Samantha and Justin. In addition, my husband and I have three beautiful grandchildren, Kaiden, Jackson, and Nova. We definitely have a wonderful life
Colina is a special place with a staff committed to creating a partnership with all of our families to help our children achieve excellence and demonstrate good character. Our mission statement, "Inspiring Growth and Achieving Excellence" is evident throughout our school and embraced by our staff and students. Colina earned the A+ School of Excellence Award in 2018, a distinction that we are very proud of and live every day.
Our theme this year is "Together, we will RISE UP to New Heights!" This theme speaks to our commitment to partner with our families and greater school community to ensure all our students achieve greatness. I know these are unprecedented times and I want you trust that we are in this together for each and every one of our students.
