•  6th Grade Language Arts Curriculum Map

    Students will work throughout the year to demonstrate their knowledge and skill through project-based learning, labs, individual assessments and collaborative assignments. 

    1st Quarter

    • Elements of Literatureanalyzing plot and setting;character analysis
    • Informational focus:  outlining and note-taking (Cornell Notes)
    • Elements of Languagetypes of sentences; sentence structure; nouns, prepostitions, subject and predicate
    • Writing:  Personal narratives, comparing characters
    • Spelling
    • Vocabulary development
    • First book report due
    2nd Quarter
    • Elements of Literature: Theme, forms of fiction, biography/autobiography
    • Walk Two Moons: chapter book
    • Book Reports: October
    • Informative text: analyzing evidence, main ideas, compare/contrast
    • Elements of Language: paragraphs, pronouns, conjuctions, interjections
    • Writing: Informative text, creative writing (scary story, written argument supporting a position with clear reasons and relevant information)
    • Spelling: every Wednesday and a test every fifth/sixth week.
    • Vocabulary development

     

    3rd Quarter
    • Poetry: forms, genres, terminology, poets
    • Similes, metaphors, personification, poetic vocabulary
    • Research project on a poet
    • Book Report
    • Elements of Language: verbs, adverbs, adjectives
    • Expository Writing:  advertizing brochure
    • Spelling: every Wednesday with a test every fifth/sixth week.

    • AIMS review
    • Informative Text
