Learn At Home Resources for Elementary English Language Arts

  • 1) Download corresponding grade level material from the Core Knowledge Foundation website

    2) Follow this process for supporting students at home:

    • Read text in chapters
    • Discuss reading with students (see sample questions below)
      • What is the text about?
      • What new information did you learn about ______ (e.g. topic, character)?
      • What questions do you have about what you read?
    • Identify accompanying activity page(s) from student Activity Book to complete for the section read (can be done on notebook paper if a printer is not available).
    • Ask an open ended question about the reading that would require students to think critically about what they read. The question should cause students to reread sections of the text to come up with an answer. Grade K students will draw about the reading and students in grades 1-5 will write about the reading.
    • Grades K & 1 only: Students can practice their handwriting using Handwriting Practice. Short songs/chants appear at the beginning of each section to support students in formation of each letter.

    3) Visit supplementary resources that support learning of the ELA units of study. Students should review connected materials, complete accompanying activities and discuss learning with family members.

    Grades K-2

    • Core Knowledge History & Geography Readers (NOTE: please scroll to the bottom of the page to find titles organized by grade level). These readers align to topics of study that students have been exposed to during English language Arts.
