Hello and Welcome to my website!
My name is Emily Sutherland and I grew up in Farmington, Michigan. I have two older sisters and a younger brother that I love. When I was in high school my family decided to move to Phoenix. After graduating from high school I attended the University of Arizona for my undergraduate degree. I loved attending the U of A and being on my own.
After I graduated with my Bachelors Degree, I moved back to Phoenix and starting working as a 3rd grade teacher in Laveen. Over the following 4 years, I ended up teaching 4th grade math and 8th grade math. While teaching, I attended Grand Canyon University and received my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
I love teaching and working with students. This is my 7th year teaching, and my second year in the Kyrene School District. I’m so excited to be able to work in supportive and challenging environment and I can’t wait to see where this year leads us! I know that 6th grade is a time of growth for many students as they learn to be more independent and navigate middle school. I am always open to working with students during the school year to help them be as successful as possible. I believe that all students can learn how to do math, it's just about finding the strategies that work and make sense for each student.
Although teaching is my passion, I also have other hobbies and interests. I have two cats, whom I adore, named Sunny and Stormy. They keep me pretty busy when I'm at home. When I'm not hanging out with my cat I enjoy reading and watching movies. I'm also trying to get into hiking more and exploring some of the beautiful places around the Valley and the state, and I recently took up yoga during quarantine. I'm an avid Harry Potter Fan and am part of the Ravenclaw house as well!
