    Commutative Property of Addition

    Add numbers in any order- moving numbers (flip flop)

    5 + 1 = 1 + 5

    a + b = b + a

    Commutative Property of Multiplication

    Multiply numbers in any order- moving numbers (flip flop)

    5 · 8 = 8 · 5

    ab = ba

    Associative Property of Addition

    Group numbers when adding.  The numbers stay in the same order, but the grouping changes.

    (9+3) + 2 = 9 + (3+2)

    (a + b) + c = a (b + c)

    Associative Property of Multiplication

    Group numbers when multiplying.  The numbers stay in the same order, but the grouping changes.

    (4· 9) · 7 = 4 · (7· 9)

    (ab)c = a(bc)

    Identity Property of Zero

    The sum of any number and zero is equal to that number

    9 + 0 = 9

    a + 0 = a

    Identity Property of One

    The product of any number and 1 is equal to that number

    6 · 1 = 6

    a · 1 = a

    Property of Zero

    The product of any number and zero is zero

    5 · 0 = 0

    a · 0 = 0

    Distributive Property

    When multiplying a number times a sum, you can find the sum first and then multiply, or multiply each number in the sum and then add.

    6 · (4+5)= 6· 4 + 6· 5

    a(b + c) = ab + ac
