Can you guess which one is your teacher?
    About The Teacher

Hello and welcome to the 4th grade! My name is Megan Schmalstieg and I am really excited to start my 7th year teaching 4th grade at Monte Vista Elementary! I came to Phoenix eight years ago with my husband. We moved from Washington state and so enjoy the warm and sunny weather here. During my free time, I like to work on projects around our house, paint, read, play with our dog, and travel. I have visited 16 countries so far, and hope to see many more.

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico (where, coincidentally, I attended Monte Vista Elementary!), then moved to Anchorage, Alaska when I was 12. I relocated to Portland, Oregon where I attended Lewis & Clark College and received a BA in History. Leaving college back then, I wasn’t sure what my career was going to be and I spent several years working for a local company in Portland doing retail operations, tech support and training. Along the way, I spent time volunteering at the local zoo and Audubon Society where I had a chance to work with children through their education outreach programs. It was then I discovered my love for teaching. I have since taken a number of education courses and completed a Masters in Teaching from the University of Southern California.
This will be my eighth year here in the Kyrene School District, and I am thrilled to be working with such a great group of educators, parents, and students. My mission in the classroom is to create a safe and friendly community dedicated to exploration and opportunities for growth for all students. I want to spark my students' curiosity and encourage a lifelong love for learning!
