The first quarter of learning in 5th grade focuses on how to study and think critically. Students need to complete work but then learn to study the completed work. We spend time making and studying flash cards, quizzing each other, covering and self checking, genuinely grading practice, etc. I encourage students to know what they do not know and ask for help. Students should find a place at home to put graded work. Graded work usually goes home a couple of times a week. Parents are encouraged to review graded work and ask their child additional questions. Often, I can send home additional practice or point you to some good websites if further practice is needed. 5th grade is a year to build mature, organized middle school students that leave with sound learning habits.
