Hello friends! I am so excited to be one of the 6th Grade Language Arts teachers here at Altadeña Middle School. More importantly, I am thrilled to be your teacher! It’s going to be a fun year filled with loads of learning and new adventures. I am eager to learn all about each one of you, but first I want to share with you a few things about me.

I was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, where the main hub of my family still resides. After I graduated from high school, I went to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), and then attended Buena Vista University, where I received my Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Elementary Education. I made the move out here to Arizona in February of 2011, and have loved it ever since!

I like to spend my free time with my family who live out here. My uncle is Mr. Smith, (the PE teacher here at Altadena), and my Aunt Meredy is a 6th grade Language Arts teacher over at Akimel. Addison and Ainsley are my two super fab cousins, whom I adore! I also enjoy spending time with friends, hiking, shopping, reading, decorating, and going to sporting events.

I am super excited for the year to begin and for all of you to be a part of our class crew. I look forward to finally meeting you. Hope you are ready for this new chapter in your life-it's going to be one spectacular year!

Mr. Philip Bertling

Dear Parents and Students,

I'm originally from Solon, Iowa and moved to Augusta, Georgia in 2006 where I spend 11 years. I graduated from The University of Iowa in 2004 and acquired my masters degree from ASU in 2010.  I served as a 5th grade teacher for 6 years and as a STEM Coordinator for Dorothy Hains Elementary for 5 years. In June of 2017 my family moved to Phoenix following my wife's new job and I took a position as the 6th grade science at Altadeña Middle School. My wife Carolyn and I are joined by our three sons Garrett, Holden and Carter. In my free time I enjoy being with my family along with mountain biking, gardening, photography and being outdoors.

Sincerely,

Philip Bertling

Ms. Kathryn Nunez

Hi Everyone! Welcome to 6th grade!

My name is Kathy Nunez and I am so excited to start this 2019-2020 school year with you!

This is my 19th year teaching at Altadena and my fifteenth year teaching 6th grade world history. I love history and traveling to historical places, so the 6th grade curriculum is right up my alley.

I grew up in northern Wisconsin in a family of teachers. Both my parents were teachers and both my grandmothers. I am of course, a die-hard Packer fan. Besides following them, I also love to read historical fiction, hike, and travel.

Following along those lines, this summer I hiked 88 miles along the north coast of Northern Ireland over the course of six days. After the hike, we flew to Bath, England; home of the ancient Roman baths and the city they named Aqua Sullis. I have also hiked Hadrian's Wall in nothern England, visited Stonehenge, the Roman colosseum and Parthenon, the ruins of Pompeii, the the Parthenon in Greece.

Additionally, seven years ago I was chosen to teach summer school English at a high school in Wroclaw, Poland. Teaching in Poland was an experience I will never forget. It was so rewarding to be able to combine my love of teaching, history, and travel in a new cultural environment.

I cannot wait to share these experiences with you all and I look forward to meeting you and making our own new memories this year!
