            An Introduction to Inventions
Welcome to the wonderful world of simple inventions and machines where once you enter, you become an inventor! You will think creatively about the world around you. A world where you will invent a practical solution to an everyday problem. So put on your inventor's cap and let's get started!

Safety Counts
Have you ever seen an invention and said, "Hey, I could have invented that!" Maybe you have an inventor's mind--let's find out! You will be working on a homework assignment to invent a tool. You will use your imagination and creativity working independently to create a new tool/invention or to modify an existing tool. You will design and build or modify a tool that performs a practical function. You will use the guidance of your parents or your teacher to complete your task. It is necessary that you observe all safety guidelines and take appropriate precautions when building your invention. Eye protection (goggles) should always be worn when working with tools. The tool must not interfere with any electrical outlets. The tool must not use any razor or sharp blades, nor may it be potentially explosive or pressurized or have flame features. You must always operate tools with the guidance of an adult.

Information Overload
The first step to invention is to think of a problem you would like to solve. What could you invent to solve that problem? Visit each of these websites. They will help you generate ideas for your invention. Go to your local library and read books on simple machines and inventions. I have many copies of Steven Caney's Invention Book in our classroom library, an excellent resource for you to access. As you collect information, complete the problem web and invention idea web in your invention packet to organize your ideas.
