SIOP™[1] is
based on current knowledge and research-based practices for promoting learning
with ELLs
1. When planning and conducting lessons
incorporate both content objectives
and language objectives that are
clearly defined.
2. Link new concepts to students’
background and pre-teach key vocabulary.
3. Use a variety of supplemental
materials to provide real-life context and enable students to bridge prior
experiences with new learning.
4. Help make content comprehensible by
adjusting the rate of speech and enunciation to the students’ level of
proficiency.
5. Provide opportunities for
interaction and/or discussion. Allow for sufficient wait time in order for
students to process and verbalize the language needed for communication.
6. To the extent possible incorporate
authentic, meaningful activities into lessons so that students can attach a
reality to their learning.
7. Make explicit connections between
new learning and the material, vocabulary, and concepts previously covered in
class.
8. Give clear directions in both oral
and written form. Use visuals often.
9. Use effective questioning
techniques and provide constructive feedback in a timely manner.
10. Assess and measure comprehension and learning in a
variety of ways.
