Top 10 SIOP™ Tips

SIOP™[1] is based on current knowledge and research-based practices for promoting learning with ELLs

1.    When planning and conducting lessons incorporate both content objectives and language objectives that are clearly defined.

2.    Link new concepts to students’ background and pre-teach key vocabulary.

3.    Use a variety of supplemental materials to provide real-life context and enable students to bridge prior experiences with new learning.

4.    Help make content comprehensible by adjusting the rate of speech and enunciation to the students’ level of proficiency.

5.    Provide opportunities for interaction and/or discussion. Allow for sufficient wait time in order for students to process and verbalize the language needed for communication.

6.    To the extent possible incorporate authentic, meaningful activities into lessons so that students can attach a reality to their learning.

7.    Make explicit connections between new learning and the material, vocabulary, and concepts previously covered in class.

8.    Give clear directions in both oral and written form. Use visuals often.

9.    Use effective questioning techniques and provide constructive feedback in a timely manner.

10. Assess and measure comprehension and learning in a variety of ways.
