Music News - August 2007

Welcome back to an exciting year!

We hope you have a smooth transition into our adventurous  learning.

  • What Paloma music students do:

    • Learn the basic concepts of music -- beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, form, instrument, expression, and style. (National Standards for Music Education)

    • Read/ write music, sing, play instruments, move, compose/create, listen/analyze, integrate with subject areas, and study musical styles from history and culture.

    • Perform for you.

  • Music room rules for a positive learning environment:

    • 1. Follow the teacher's directions.

    • 2. Practice Paloma life skills.

    • 3. Choose a responsibility level.

  • Procedures:   When a student is having difficulty with these rules, a private warning is given or he/she may quietly leave the activity for a moment to mentally process a change. (Since there are "Reminder Cards" on the wall, the student will choose one, show it to the teacher, then comes back to the music activity.)  For more serious incidents, the student will write about the event so I can inform you with a note home.  The student and I will also take time to make a plan for the next class.  This may be followed up with a phone call.

  • Music grades: Kyrene gives two grades for music -- one for skills/knowledge and one for behavior.

    • P = Proficient: consistent demonstration of mastery  --  consistent evidence of skills and knowledge; self-directed and independent learner.

    • D = Developing: progress toward mastery  --  some evidence of skills and knowledge; some teacher assistance needed for on-task behaviors.

    • C = Area of Concern: minimal progress toward mastery  --   little evidence of skills and knowledge; teacher assistance required with proximity and multiple reminders for on-task behaviors.

  • Sharing Day:  We will have a class "Sharing Day" in the first month of school where your child can show  the interesting things done outside of Paloma.  It's a chance to show a talent!  (This also helps me see at what music level students are reading/performing!)

Advanced Music Students:  Advanced work is planned for students with advanced reading and playing skills.  If your child is taking private lessons for example, please e-mail me and have your child bring  music books to class so that I may see them and plan appropriate instruction.  Thanks!

Socks needed:  If you have any CLEAN miss-matched socks (any size, any color) that you no longer need, please send them to the music room.  We can use them for recorder storage. Thanks!

How can you help?

If you have special skills or  interests that you think might make a difference in the music learning of our students, let me know!  I'm happy to invite you to contribute!
