Our Class
Presently we have a class of 20 wonderful students raging in age from 6-7 years old. Our classroom is a "community" where each student's work space is organized into a neighborhood. We work cooperatively and are also independent workers. Our students learn many different social skills and problem solving behaviors while also mastering our academic curriculum goals. Our curricular goals are broken down into four primary areas: Reading and Language Development, Writing, Mathematics, and Science. Students are also assessed in the areas of Art, Physical Education and Music by specialized teachers in those three areas. We are a very active group and get very excited about learning new things. Hands-on interactive learning is our key teaching strategy because discovery is what first grade is all about!
Homework

Each Monday a homework packet will be sent home with your child to be completed and returned the following Friday. If there is any trouble with this timeframe, let me know! I will be more than happy to work with you.
Also, an envelope with sight word cards in it will come home every night for practice, and is to be returned each day to be assessed.
On Friday, your child's Poetry Journal will come home with a new poem added to it. Please read the poem with your child and discuss it and their illustrations. Make sure your student returns the journal by the following Friday for a new poem.
Take Home Books will come home about 2 times per week with books that are appropriate for your child based on their current reading level. Some books may have already been read in reading groups, so you should work with your child on fluency. Some books will be brand new to your child and will need some support to decode new words or unfamiliar sounds within the words. Please help your child become a responsible reader!
Occasionally other assignments will come home with your child, and they will have specific explanations and due dates attached to the activity.
