Books 'R Us Book Club

The Books 'R Us members participate in a discussion of a book
With Their Eyes about survivors of 9/11.
Fantasy, science fiction, adventure or biography -- That is the question! Every other Thursday after school in the media center, the members of the Books 'R Us Book Club meet to choose, discuss and critique books.
This is the fourth year for the Books 'R Us book club at Akimel A-al, and we are trying something a little different. Based on the popular summer TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance," we are challenging our members in a "So You Think You Can Read" format. Each month the members choose partners out of a hat. Each pair of readers then choose a specific genre. The idea is to find two copies of a title in that genre to read. At each meeting we discuss something all of the books have in common such as setting, plot development, characters, etc.
We have also added a little competition to the mix. At each meeting the members compete to see who can the titles and authors of the most books based on a specific criteria. At the first meeting we were "Watching for Wizards." The students searched for books which included the word wizard in the Destiny description.
Our very special volunteer, a mother of one of the students, comes to every meeting to oversee the discussion. She doesn't get to talk very much though. The students tend to monopolize most discussions!
If you would like to join the club, talk to Mrs. Brewer in the media center.
