6A EXPECTATIONS

  1. Homework: Students will have approximately 30 to 90 minutes of homework each day. Incomplete classroom assignments to be finished as homework may also be required and add additional time.

Reading- Home reading and book projects will be assigned for each grading period. Students are expected to read at home daily.

Language Arts- Spelling, vocabulary, and editing homework will be assigned weekly.  Several writing assignments will be assigned each grading period.  Time at home for editing and final copy may be needed.

Math- Assignments that are not completed in class will be assigned as homework.  Students will not be allowed to turn assignments in early.

Social Studies- Current events or map skills assignments will be given weekly.  Occasional long-term projects will be required.

Science- Occasional short assignments will be given. Assignments that are not completed in class will be assigned as homework.  In the 3rd quarter, a  large home project will be assigned.

Please check teacher web sites for more information about the weekly agenda, class

study topics, and long term projects.  Access the school web page at

http://www.kyrene.org/schools/akimel/ams.htm and locate the individual teacher site.

  1. Late Work:  If homework assignments are not completed on time, they will receive NO CREDIT.  Completion is encouraged as it can make the difference with borderline grades.

Homework is considered to be daily practice work.  Long-term assignments would    include projects, research papers, or assignments that take several weeks to complete.

If long-term assignments are late a “C” is the highest grade possible.  The grading of the quality of the work will then be scored from the “C” to get a final grade.

  1. Quality Standards:  All papers must have a proper heading.  The heading needs to be on the right hand side of the paper beginning on the top line. The proper format will be explained to all students and displayed in the classroom.  Assignments must be done on loose-leaf paper- NO TORN OUT, FRAYED PAPERS!

Papers without a proper heading will receive NO CREDIT.

All assignments must be completed on white lined paper. All assignments must be neatly written and legible in pencil, unless otherwise directed.

  1. Absent Work:  Make-up work for absences will be assigned at the discretion of the teacher according to the guidelines set forth in the Akimel A-al handbook. Students will be responsible for collecting any absent work and returning the completed work to teachers within the given timeframe. For every one day missed, students would have 2 days to return the absent work.  Any assignment due on a day of absence would be due the day the student returns to school.

  1. Assessment:

Grades will be determined by points earned upon completion of classroom

assignments, homework, tests, quizzes, group or individual projects, as well as class

participation.

  1. Notebook/Folder:  Every student is required to keep a three ring binder or an

accordion folder and an updated agenda.  Teachers will decide when papers may be

removed from the binders or folders and left at home.  The binder/folder, agenda,

pencils and paper will be needed each throughout the year.  Please plan to keep these

supplied throughout the year.

  1. Discipline: Each team will manage their own discipline procedures. Our team will implement a time-out/refocus plan.

1st refocus: the student is given a verbal warning.

2nd refocus: the student is sent to another teacher’s class to fill out a refocus form.

3rd refocus: the student is sent to time-out in the ISI room and the parent is contacted by phone.

Detention will be given for TARDINESS and GUM/CANDY.

  1. Communication between home and school:  The Sixth Grade Team truly

believes in the learning and partnership of students, parents, and teachers.  Our goal

is increased communication between partners.  This communication will take the form

of assignment calendars (agendas) and require parent signature each week.  Contact

may also be in the form of letters/notes, e-mail, or by phone.  Formal parent

conferences will be available twice during the year.  Please understand that you make

contact us or request a conference anytime during the year if you have questions or

concerns.
