All books read for book reports must be CHAPTER BOOKS and at LEAST 60 PAGES long OR approved by Mrs. Whitaker.

The due date for this book report is ______________________.

Books may be fiction of any kind (including historical fiction).  In addition to the written book report, you need to prepare an activity of your choice (see choices below).  In class, you will present a short summary of the book and share your activity.

ALL BOOK REPORTS MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

Title

Author

Illustrator

Parent Signature

A good 3rd grade SUMMARY (min. of 2, up to 3 paragraphs)

SUMMARY GUIDELINES

Paragraphs one and two (can have a 3rd paragraph) must summarize the book.

Paragraph three (or four) must describe your favorite part of the book and tell

me why.

Paragraph four (or five) must relate the book to your own personal

experience OR describe what you would do in a similar situation.

Paragraph five (or six) must praise or criticize the book, or the author, or

writing style (was the book easy to understand the way it was written?).

Include in this paragraph whether you would recommend this

book to a friend and tell why or why you would not.  (Your

personal tastes in literature are important and should be shared.)

Remember to write well-developed paragraphs and be neat.  Check spelling, punctuation, and sentences (are they complete, do they “make sense.”)

ACTIVITY  (Choose one activity to prepare at home and bring to class):

1.                 Collage Poster – Using a small sheet of poster board supplied by Mrs. Whitaker (appx. 10 x 14 in.), prepare a collage that illustrates the theme/plot of the story and the main character(s).  You may use any items from home, such as markers, magazines, craft materials, etc.  Remember to put your name, book title, and parent signature on the back of the poster.

2.                 Book in a Bag – Using a white paper bag provided to you by Mrs. Whitaker, place 4-6 three-dimensional items inside the bag that relate to the story.  Objects must fit inside the bag.  Nothing alive, please!  You must also draw a color picture on the front of the bag.  Remember to put your name, book title, and parent signature on the back of the bag.

3.                 Book Jacket – Using a piece of construction paper provided by Mrs. Whitaker (12 x 18 in.) prepare a book jacket which includes: title, author, illustrator, a color picture on the front, a brief summary of the book on the back of the jacket, and a side binding that includes the title and author.  Remember to put your name and parent signature on the back of the jacket.
