Week of November 9th -13th Reading/Spelling This week in Reading we are reading How To Babysit An Orangutan. It is a non-fiction story about an orangutan orphanage. There are five vocabulary words in our spelling list that come from our story. Our focus skill this week is summarizing. The kids will be summarizing the story and will share their summaries with their classmates. In spelling, the pattern that we will be looking at is the -ou sound. Don't forget that spellingcity.com is a great option for the spelling contract.
Writer’s Workshop In Writer's Workshop this week we are finishing up a prompt writing called "Lost and Found." The children have put their final drafts together and will be sharing them with the class. CASS writing was last week and I think the kids performed really well. Math This week in math we are learning about derived facts and continue to work on using the doubling strategy to solve problems. The kids did really well with partners to figure out The Big Dinner in class. During the past few weeks, we have learned a few new strategies that allow the students to solve problems differently and also give them the opporunity to explain in words exactly what they were thinking when solving the problems. We will also be taking the November SIP this week.
Science/Social Studies
This week the kids will complete a poster project on the water cycle. The kids will design a poster that explains all aspects of the water cycle and illustrate what the cycle looks like. They will be incorporting the vocabulary we used during the water unit and will be able to use the posters to help in upcoming science units.
