The first initiative we launched was classroom recycling. The initiative was started in order to create awareness about our growing landfills and to come up with ways to reduce the trash produced here at Colina. Additionally, there are lessons about environmental impact, science and math that are available to extend recycling education to the classroom.
Student volunteers meet once per week to collect, sort and tally recycling during their lunch recess. They may also choose to eat lunch in room 7 with “Ms. Laura,” the alternate recess interventionist and program coordinator.
The students involved in the recycling program have also made posters promoting recycling, decorated bins (generously donated by community member Jody Pectol from ZZeeks Pizza) and have brainstormed creative ways to reuse some of the recycled items.
In the Spring, the Recycling Team will put together activities surrounding Earth Day. Parents who wish to volunteer with the recycling program are encouraged to contact Laura Limon at email@example.com.
