Welcome to Lagos, a Dual Language Academy, in Ahwhatukee! Our points of pride begin with our staff. Our highly qualified, dedicated and caring staff are committed in meeting the academic, behavioral and social needs of our students. Our district's curriculum that aligns with College Career Readiness guides daily instruction in content areas. A wide range of research based instructional strategies are utilized across content areas that support student learning. Our teachers collaborate with grade level colleagues and Literacy, Math and SEI coaches, resource teachers and gifted resource teacher to meet the needs of our students. Technology promotes student engagement and motivation in classroom instruction. Students also receive weekly instruction in Art, Music, and PE based on state standards. Additionally, our Media Specialist teaches technology and literary curriculum to students weekly.
Students receive recognition on a daily basis from staff verbally and with Mustang awards. Students focus on the 3 B's - Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. Our Mustang grade level wall displays the Mustang certificates awarded to students highlighting the accomplishments of individual students and the K-5 grade levels. Classroom drawings, monthly drawings and end of quarter drawings are additional ways that we celebrate positive student behavior. PEACE days are earned for positive playground behaviors with celebrations when they reach the target.
Our Dual Language program, a highly sought after program, where students learn Spanish at an early age. Three and four year old children can enroll in Bienvendos!, a Kyrene School District Community Education early learning program, where students learn Spanish through learning centers. Our Dual Language Kindergarten program provides students the opportunity to learn Spanish through content instruction. Both programs follow the 50/50 model, a descriptor of in how instructional day, 50% of instruction in English and 50% of instruction in Spanish. The cognitive benefits for students attending this program are backed by decades of research. Each year the Dual Language program will expand to the next grade level.
We are so proud of our WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program. Dads have an opportunity to spend a day at our school welcoming students as they arrive, reading to students, helping in the computer lab and other school day activities. Students are also provided various opportunities to learn leadership skills, share their input and feedback through our Student Council and also the Principal's Student Advisory Council. Our Peace Ambassadors, 5th grade students, meet Kindergarteners at the playground gates where they welcome and assist them in getting each child to their classroom line starting on the second day of school and throughout the remainder of the school year. A wide range of after school activities and clubs are offered through our district's outstanding Community Education Department. Intermediate students can also participate in a before school Broadcasting Club and after school clubs such as running club, school choir and intramural sports that are led by our teachers.
Our parents support our schools in so many ways. We have a fabulous PTO that volunteers countless hours to organize many events that bring our school community together. Everything the PTO does is based on ways to promote family engagement that builds a strong community. Parents make a difference by being engaged and involved in their child's education, by volunteering, participating in PTO sponsored events, supporting fundraisers, by attending school and classroom activities.
I am so proud of our staff, our students, our parents who make Lagos such an amazing school!
