Our Class

Ms. Jackson along with Mrs. Wallace are very fortunate to have 24 wonderful students this year.  We love reading, math, science, social studies.... we love to learn!

Some of our favorite authors are Barbara Park, Beverly Cleary, Barbara Cooney, Patricia Polacco, Patricia MacLachlan, and Andrew Clements.  We love reading fiction, humorous fiction, poetry, fantasy, mysteries, and biographies.

Another favorite activity is Writers' Workshop.  We love being authors and sharing our own stories with each other.  Keeping our own Writer's Notebook is another one of our favorites.

In Math we enjoy solving problems, looking for patterns, learning about our place value system, and sharing our ideas with each other.  This year brings new challenges as we learn to record our thinking when solving problems, and to solve problems in multiple ways.

Homework

Each week homework will be assigned which reinforces the skills and concepts taught in the classroom, or prepares your child for ideas to be introduced.  Our general homework guidelines will be Tuesdays and Thursdays for Math assignments, and Wednesdays for Language Arts assignments.  However, I send home all the assignments for the week in a weekly contract which is given at the beginning of the week.  Your family can then determine the homework schedule which best suits your needs.  It is strongly suggested to spend 20 - 30 minutes each day on the contract, rather than complete it in one long session.  The entire contract is due on Friday.  In addition, your child is required to read at least 20 minutes three times a week.  Also, a list of spelling words is included with the contract.  Students should practice and review the words every day.

In addition to the weekly contract, a book project will be assigned each month.  Information about these projects, as well as the due date, will be sent home when the project is assigned at the beginning of each month
