Space Day 2008 at Sierra

Sierra was chosen by NASA and Lockheed Martin to participate in "Student Signatures in Space" on this year's Space Day celebration...Friday, May 2.  This special program is part of National Space Day.  This year's celebration is very special because it celebrates "50 years of NASA history". All Sierra students signed a poster that was mailed to us.  We mailed it back to Lockheed Martin. They will take a digital image of the signatures and put it on a CD.  The CD will then be flown on a Space Shuttle mission. After the mission, the poster will be returned to our school with a flight certificate and a photo of the Space Shuttle crew. This exciting program is to encourage students to take a personal interest in space and pique their interest in math and science studies.

On that Friday, May 2, the entire 5th Grade class participated in a conference call with Dr. Scott Smith at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Dr. Smith emailed us a PowerPoint presentation which he narrated during the conference call.  Students were also able to ask Dr. Smith questions.
