The Golden Rule
While watching the highlights of the Martin Luther King activities, there was a recurring theme in many people’s comments (from a young girl around 6 years old to a woman celebrating her 100th birthday) and that was to “treat others the way you want to be treated,” otherwise known as the “Golden Rule.” It’s a simple rule; but many times during the heat of the moment or because we’re in such a hurry, it becomes forgotten. Often I see children who come to me with their problems. While explaining their frustration with someone else, the root of the problem, the unfavorable choice of behavior they made often exacerbated the incident. They come to talk to me about the “effect” without really realizing they were the “cause”. During our discussion, I’ll often bring up point of view and we’ll do some role-playing and generally they’re able to see how their actions usually control how others react to them or treat them. We talk about using “I” messages to get what we want and to be heard. We talk about “think time” – thinking before we speak to make sure it’s appropriate, useful, and gets the point across. So, why am I sharing this information with you, the parents? Because children often learn how to deal with their anger, interact with others, deal with stress/anxiety, and handle conflicts by listening, observing, and being on the receiving end of their parents. Please, please, please remember YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER IN YOUR CHILD’S LIFE and they are learning from you. What messages are you sending your child? What are the messages you WANT to be sending your child? “The Golden Rule - Treat others the way you want to be treated.” ****If you’d like more information or are interested in participating in classes yourself, please contact Jodi Becker @ 480-783-3173 or via email @ jbecker@kyrene.org ****

Social Worker’s Corner
by Khalid Jenkins, Niños Social Worker
Winter weather has hit the valley this month. With cold temperatures and rainy days descending on us, we would like to remind parents to send their kids to school with appropriate clothing. When students arrive at Niños in the morning temperatures can be in the low to mid 30’s. Though the temperature may rise as the day goes on, making for a nice lunch recess, it is during morning recess that your kids spend the most time outside. Please make sure that your children are wearing warm coats or multiple layers of sweaters and long sleeve shirts. Hats, gloves, and scarves will also help to keep the children warm and healthy.
***Please do not allow your child to come to school in shorts during the winter.***
If you need assistance in getting warm clothes for your child or yourself please utilize our Family Resource Center @ 480-783-3172 or call me @ 480-783-3183. |
