The Monte Vista Heritage Garden Project
Monte Vista has been chosen as a recipient of a generous grant from the Arizona Game and Fish department Heritage Fund for the 2005/06 school year. Funds for this grant are awarded under the Schoolyard Habitat Program for projects that encourage wildlife education on school sites through the development or enhancement of urban wildlife areas. Monte Vista will be constructing a Hummingbird habitat garden which will include a natural pond and native plants. This garden is designed to attract mostly hummingbirds but will also encourage other wildlife to visit such as rabbits, lizards, and native birds. We hope by providing an outdoor classroom in which to learn we will motivate and encourage our students to appreciate Arizona wildlife and take an active role with regards to environmental conservation.
Click on the thumbnail photos below for a peak at our new fountain inhabitants, some of the finished benches and columns decorated with tiles hand- painted by students, teachers, and community members. The dedication ceremony took place on January 18th and now students are using the garden for learning opportunities about habitats, desert life, and respect for our environment.
Please visit this page often as we update the community with the progress of the garden. We will post "in progress" photos as well as including gardening links to inspire the gardener in all of us.
