The Process
Part I - Adding to Your Knowledge of
Colonial Persecution
Begin
by forming groups of four. You will be conducting some of this research as a group and
some of it will be done individually. Your first task as a group is to hold a
brainstorming session about the lifestyle of the Colonial Puritans. Use the knowledge you
gained from reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond, or any other information you may
know. Use the Learning Log to record your responses to
these questions:
What did the Puritans believe?
What role did women play in their society?
How were children treated?
How were the Quakers different from the Puritans?
Now each team member needs to go online to NoteStar to log on to their account. This will be done following your teacher's instructions.
Next, check out the three web site in Part I of the Resources page. Record your Reponses to the Points to Ponder in your NoteStar account. You may want to discuss the questions with your group before you enter your responses.
Part II - Gathering Information About Source Reliability
Convene as a group again and discuss these two questions: "How do you know what to believe?" and "Why is it important for you to have knowledge about the source of information?" In your Learning Log, record your responses.
View the web sites in Part II of the Resources page. Some have to do with determining the value of a web site, and some are about analyzing and evaluating historical fiction writing. As you are viewing them, take notes in your NoteStar account about how the information presented applies to trusting information you read or hear.
In your Learning Log, compile and condense all of the knowledge you have about determining source reliability.
Part III - Assuming Your Roles and Completing Your Projects
Each team member will now do some further research on their own and then prepare their projects. It is suggested that the team meets together periodically to discuss their progress and get suggestions from the others on refining their projects.
