Introduction

It's the year 1660. Your family home is in the Netherlands, but everyday life is becoming  unbearable for you. Members of your religion are being persecuted, even murdered. You see a circular posted at the town meeting hall describing life in the Connecticut Colony.  It sounds pretty enticing; freedom . . . freedom to make your own choices, freedom to worship as you choose. So, are you ready to pack up and leave?  Can you believe everything you read and hear?  Maybe you should ask a few questions so you know what lies ahead.

The journey across the Atlantic was a challenge, and life in early New England was difficult. We'll look at the reasons for these pilgrimages, and the harsh realities of what these brave families found waiting.  Freedoms were hard-earned. In Elizabeth George Speare's novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, the heroine, Kit, discovers that life in Connecticut Colony has many hardships.  She also endured false accusations of being a witch. But who were these accusers? Were they credible witnesses? How can you know what information is reliable? Along our voyage through this WebQuest, we'll learn how to ask questions before making a decision, and  how to "consider the source" or evaluate the reliability of an information source.  So grab your bags and let's set sail!
