Lesson Plans and Teacher Resources
Here are a few resources I created for our Gifted Resource Program at Brisas Elementary. You are welcome to use or modify these resources. I would love to hear from you if you use any of these plans. Any comments or suggestions are also welcomed.
Debate and Persuasive Writing
Using debates in the classroom can help students grasp many essential critical thinking and presentation skills. Here you will also find a 23-page document with ideas and resources for teaching debate. View our Student Debates here.
Literature Units to Foster Critical Thinking
In this lesson plan, upper elementary students learn about Bloom's Taxonomy of Higher Order Thinking Skills and apply their new knowledge to creating Literature Study Units.
- View nine literature units created by Mrs. Sunda's students
- Another student-created project featureing six novel units
- Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM Literature Unit
"Consider the Source" Webquest
Students in grades 5-7 will use the Internet, Elizabeth George Speare's novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and other unit materials to learn about the strategies for determining the reliability of source information. Teacher Notes for this webquest can be viewed here.
Internet Investigations: Unsolved Mysteries
What happened to the colonial settlers of Roanoke? Who built Stonehenge and why? Students become Internet Sleuths as they uncover the facts and fiction about a variety of unsolved mysteries. Using books and the Internet, student groups research an unsolved mystery or unusual occurrence. During the research, the groups evaluate the reliability of the sources of information found on the Internet. View our investigations of seven "mysteries" here.
Mythology Virtual Fieldtrip
What meanings did myths about gods, goddesses, and heroes have for the ancient Greeks? What meanings do the Greek myths have for us today? Take your students on a "field trip" to various websites to help them answer these questions, as well as create several myth projects.
