A young man was sitting by a wall thinking about what to paint in the middle of the wall.  He was thinking about painting the same thing that he had just painted on the porcelain plate.  That was his job - to paint porcelain plates, window sills, walls and fans.  But then he had an urge - to become an artist.

He was so excited that he ran to his mother and said, “ I want to be a painter”.  And that is how this young man, Pierre Auguste Renoir, became a famous artist.Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France on February 25, 1841. He grew up in Paris. In 1910 he had to get a wheel chair, but he still kept painting. He was the sixth youngest, of seven children.  He came from a very poor family, but not poor in talent for art.   Pierre’s first job was not that great, but at least he had one. He was very good at his first job, but he was not satisfied. At age nineteen, he had saved enough money to go to school to become an artist. “Noir” means black in French, just as he died in a black bed.

Pierre Auguste Renoir has a different kind of style than other artists. He loved to use light colors, like pink, green, yellow, and many shades of blue.  His most favorite paintings were of children and women.  He did not put much fine detail in his paintings.  He is most famous for his short brush strokes.  His style of painting was called Impressionism, which was popular from the  1850 to 1890’s.

Pierre had influences that helped him become a painter, but mostly it was himself.  One influence was when he went to Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Brazil. Monet and Manet seemed to influence him in his paintings.  His first job was painting porcelain plates, window sills, fans, walls, and a few other things. That first job of painting those things was what made him decide to become a artist.

"The Swing"  painted by Pierre Auguste Renoir is a beautiful painting. This is a lovely piece of art because of the graceful and smooth lines.  It looks as if the woman is going to jump on the swing.  Her dress has the prettiest shades of blue and purple. They look so soft. Another reason it’s beautiful is that he used cool colors.  In this painting he uses very much white and blue.  The light is mostly at the bottom and the center of the painting.  The dark is mostly at the top.  The woman is  the focal point of the picture, but the man is important too. In this painting he uses emotionalism.  This painting, painted in 1876 is definitely a masterpiece.

Pierre Auguste Renoir is such a brilliant artist. He put joy in our hearts. Every painting of his is like one ticket to joy.  He painted and painted and when he died he lay in his black bed mumbling,  “I did what I could, and I did what I promised to myself and family.”
