He was in his garden watering plants when he saw it.  He saw the purple, orange, blue, and yellow sunset.  That is when Raphael decided to become a painter.
Raffaelo Sanzio, was one of the most influential painters of the Italian Renaissance.  He was a master of many subjects such as, archeology, poetry, history, and painting.  He became one of Italy's most learned men, respected for his knowledge, architecture, and art.

Raphael was born on April 16, 1483 in Urbino, in the Province of Umbria in Italy.  His real name was Raffaelo Sanzio.  When Raphael was eight years old his mother died.  Raphael's father was a talented artist named Giovanni di Sanati.  Raphael's father died when he was eleven years old, and he was left with a step mother.

Raphael's father was influential during his childhood.  Before Raphael was sixteen, he became an apprentice to the famous artist Pietro Perugino.  Between the ages of seventeen and twenty, Raphael painted some of his finest works.  At the age of twenty-one, he moved to Florence, the art capital of Europe.  There he studied Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo.  At age twenty-six, he was recognized as one of Italy's most famous and creative artists. Raphael was also known as an archeologist.  Raphael influenced artists for more than four hundred years after his death.

Raphael's style was to paint portraits and nature.  He also painted murals in the Vatican.   He used the faces of his teachers, friends, and fellow artists.  He also used rich colors in his paintings, to give added meaning.  Raphael's work shows his deep admiration and respect for all women.

Raphael painted a beautiful painting called "Vision of Knight".  This painting shows a sleeping knight and two maids.  One maid symbolizes peace and love, and the second maid symbolizes law and order.  In this picture, Raphael uses soft and smooth texture.  In "Vision of Knight" the shapes are rounded.  Raphael uses dark warm colors, (red, orange and yellow).  In this piece, there are also a few cool colors, (blue green and purple).  The focal point of this painting is a sleeping knight with his head resting on his shield.

The painting also shows depth, and it is a good example of symmetry.  The far right of the painting is the lightest and the most peaceful, and the bottom is the darkest, which brings your attention to this part of the painting

In conclusion, Raphael is best known for his portraits and his clear, concise style as an influential artist of the Italian Renaissance.  His brief useful life was spent creating magnificent works in painting and architecture that earned him immortality.

                  Vision of Knight

Way down in the meadow Raffaelo paints
"Vision of Knight", oh was a beautiful painting,
but still sad and peaceful at the same time.
Sad as the knight's breathless body,
but peaceful as the silent night.
Beautiful as the people and things look so real,
the wrinkles in the clothes look so real.
And the facial expressions -
I will always remember that knight.
