Pablo Y. Ruiz Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881.  He died in Paris, France in 1973.  Pablo also visited Italy at age 19.  His father was an art teacher. What made Picasso decide to paint and change the way he painted?  Picasso's father was an art teacher and encouraged him to paint.

The civil war in Spain caused Picasso to paint a huge picture called Guernica.  It was 12 feet  high and 25 feet  long.  Picasso had about three periods.  One was the Blue Period.  He started this period when his best friend died.  Another period was his Rose Period.  He started this period when he fell in love.  A style Picasso is famous for is Cubism.  He used this style because he thought it was unique.  Picasso wanted to paint differently.  After he went to Italy his paintings became 3-D in appearance.

Picasso did and liked other things.  Picasso was the most famous artist in the 20th Century.  He didn't always paint.  He made costumes, sculpture, and other things.  Picasso mostly did art.  He made more than 20,000 works of art. Picasso was also interested in women.

Picasso had a unique way of doing art.  He usually painted people.  Some of
his paintings of people were a little abstract, but some of them weren't. They were mostly still lifes.  He used many shapes and a lot of texture.

Picasso's  "Guernica"  was painted on canvas.  It is a war picture.  His
lines were curved and thin.  The texture in this picture is rough.  The
shapes are mostly curved.

His colors were dark colors like blue, white, and black.  This things in the picture are mostly people.  There are two animals too.  The main colors that get repeated is navy blue and white.  The objects are very close together and some overlap.  You cannot see very far in this painting because of all the objects.  Guernica is not symmetrical.  The primary purpose of this painting was to express emotion.  This painting has a
bunch of horror in it.  It mostly has death and war.  It could mean that if someone is guilty they shouldn't be treated badly.  Guernica is a good example of Emotionalism.
Picasso is very unique with his artwork.  His artwork has a lot of feelings in it.  The painting Guernica has a bunch of meaning to this world.

                          The War

Every animal that you would know,
suffering from the bombs, above to below,
don't forget us scattered in the street,
we the people are getting beat,
with the screeches of horror
added to the violence

Why did it happen?
Oh why did they suffer or die?
I want to say -
Where is our Independence,
oh where can it be?
We innocent should be free
instead of paying the fee.
There are people out at war,
therefore you are after the soldiers.
To tell you again, you are not to get us
but to get past them.
