INSPIRATIONAL ARIZONANS HELP TECHER PROVIDE LIFE LESSONS
Steve Reed, a 21-year teaching veteran, likes to challenge his students at Akimel A-al Middle School by bringing them face to face with some fascinating people.
For the third year, the science instructor is offering his seventh-graders a program he conceived and dubbed "Awesome Arizona," which featuers individuals speaking on what they're best known for. Among them have been kevin Nee, who placed among the top five finalists in the World's Strongest man Competition; Perry Edinger, the Phoenix Orthopedic Clinic's research director who recently completed the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile endurance race through Death Valley.

STUDENTS CELEBRATE CONSITUTION DAY ( back to top )
Last
Thursday, Sept. 17, was the 222nd anniversary of the
signing of the United States Constitution, and while
most adults in the U.S. may have let the day come and go
without acknowledgement, the nation’s school children
learned about the Constitution in their classrooms.
Public Law 108-447 designates Sept. 17 as Constitution
Day, and all educational institutions receiving federal
funding are required to hold an educational program
pertaining to the United States Constitution on Sept. 17
of each year.
Jane Anderson, a seventh-grade teacher at Akimel A-al
Middle School, found it easy to assimilate a lesson on
the Constitution into her social studies class, which is
currently studying the Civil War.

MOON ROCKS LAND AT
KYRENE AKIMEL A-AL (back to top )
What does
it take to make seventh-graders pay attention in science
class? Oh, nothing big, just 4.6 billion-year-old moon
rocks.
Using real moon rocks in science class may seem
impossible to most teachers, but Tara Dale, a teacher at
Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School, was not daunted by the
task of bringing a bit of outer space into her
classroom.

ON PATRIOTIC DAY ( back to top )
Among the
reds, whites and blues that flew around the gym,
American war veterans watched and listened to the sights
and sounds celebrating what they have done for this
country.
It was Patriotic Day on Friday, April 17 at Kyrene
Akimel A-al Middle School and a host of teachers,
administrators, as well as local representatives John
McComish, Rae Waters and Harry Mitchell were on hand for
the annual event.
