An Arizona Department of Education Excelling School
2003-2004-2005-2006-2007

A Greeting to the Kyrene Akimel A-al Community,

I take great pride in serving as principal of Akimel A-al Middle School.  Our school has been labeled an Excelling School by the Arizona Department of Education for the past 4 years but we knew this was an excelling school before the labels were created.  Akimel A-al has had a reputation for excellence since it opened under the leadership of longtime principal, Patricia Weegar.

It is a reputation which is based on much more than test scores.  It starts with the families that we serve not only within the boundaries of our attendance area but also the families of over two hundred-fifty students who have chosen to enroll their children here rather than to their neighborhood schools.  These families in turn trust us with the education of their children.  Year in and year out, we have great kids at Akimel A-al.  Since our school’s inception we have sought to hire teachers who were not only experts in their field but who loved kids and loved to teach.  We are also blessed with a committed and professional support staff.  All of this along with the resources offered by the Kyrene School District  help to make Akimel A-al an outstanding place for your children’s education and a great place for our staff to work.

I have been a teacher and an administrator in the Kyrene School District for fifteen years.  My children were educated in Kyrene schools and were given an excellent education here. I look forward to working with your children and with you this year.  As parents, teachers, and students working together we hope to make this the best year yet for your child’s educational experience.

Sincerely,

Ernie Brodersen
Principal

What's in a name?
Akimel A-al is the fourth of six middle schools in the Kyrene School District. The name is from the language of the Akimel O'odham (Pima) People and means "Children of the River." It is pronounced "Ah' key mahl."

The name was chosen to honor the Akimel O'odham people. There are fifty square miles of Akimel O'odham land in the Kyrene School District -- a part of the large Gila River Indian Reservation. This land was included as part of the Kyrene School District in 1956. The Akimel O'odham Native American students from the Gila River Indian Reservation attend
Akimel A-al.

We take great pride in our school's name and its history.

Akimel A-al
While we pronounce the school's name "Ah' key mahl", we always write it as Akimel A-al. To leave off the A-al changes the meaning of the school's name.
