Third Grade Math

MEASUREMENT

Study of measurement in third grade includes:

  • volume
  • temperature
  • clock time
  • calendar time
  • length
  • weight

PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Formulate problems from everyday situations
  • Use mental computation strategies
  • Develop strategies and methods to solve problems
  • Explain problem solving strategies and procedures orally and in writing

OPERATIONS (+,-,x,-) and RELATIONS (<,>,=)

  • Compute addition & subtraction facts at a rate of 30 facts per min.
  • Compute multiplication & division facts at a rate of 20 facts per min.
  • Calculate sums and differences of whole numbers
  • Compute using multiplication and division

GEOMETRY

  • Identify attributes, classify, label, compare, and draw: parallel lines, rays, angles, and vertices
  • Identify attributes of 2 and 3dimensional shapes
  • Draw and locate the line of symmetry

NUMERATION

  • Read, write, and compare numbers beyond 5-digits
  • Count forward and back by 1, 2, 5, with three and four digit numbers.
  • Recognize patterns of numbers
  • Identify, read, write, order, and compare fractions
  • Recognize, count, and compare the value of money

DATA ANALYSIS

  • Collect, organize and analyze data
  • Construct graphs, displays and tables
  • Understand and makes decisions using tables, charts and graphs
  • Find range, mean, median and mode on a graph
  • Develop an understanding of probability

PATTERNS - ALGEBRA

  • Create, describe, extend patterns using shapes, designs, and numbers
  • Determine and state a rule for the relationship of a pattern
  • Determine a rule and continue a pattern
  • Find missing elements in a number sentence
