Second Grade Writing Curriculum
Second grade is an important time for young children's growth as early writers. Paloma teachers expose second graders to a great variety of authors and genres which generates an interest in writing and reading alike.

Quality children's literature serves as one springboard for discussion about good writing.

Children also learn to express themselves through writing for real

purposes and audiences.

Areas of instruction for second graders include the following:

  • Use the writing process
  • Generate topics,
  • Drafting
  • Revising ideas
  • Editing for some standard (conventional or adult) spelling

Students begin to use the following conventions:

  •  
  • Standard spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Capitalization
  • Grammar
  • Word usage
  • Good handwriting to complete a variety of purposeful written tasks

Students will:

  • Write a personal experience narrative or a creative story that has a beginning, middle, and end
  • Use descriptive words to develop ideas and advance the characters, plot, and setting
